How to get SMA data

Everybody is invited to make use of the SMA data for scientific studies. The digitized events are stored in an easy-to-handle ASCII format. The magnetic components given in those files are already baseline-corrected (however, it is always advisable to check the baselines once more before using data). The components are mostly given in geographic coordinates, for some events also in geomagnetic or Kiruna coordinates.
All original SMA films with analogue magnetogram recordings are kept at the Technical University of Braunschweig (TUBS). On request, it is possible to borrow them for scientific analysis of others then the above mentioned digitised events. However, note that at the moment no digitising system is available for SMA data, so that digitisation of data from the films needs to be done by the data users.

The "rules of the road" to use the data are only what should anyway be taken for granted inside the scientific community: When you request data, please tell us what kind of study you are planning with it. If the data is presented in a publication, its use should be acknowledged in an appropriate way. We would also be glad to receive a copy of your publication in order to update the list of SMA-related studies.
There are several "standard tools" for the work with SMA data existing at the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) in Helsinki, and at the TUBS. These tools cover e.g. displaying the data, statistcal analysis, field seperation and upward continuation etc.. Thus, we are prepared to give you support for your study if needed. (In this case, the person who does this work should be put as a coauthor in a possible publication.)

For data request or other questions concerning SMA data, please contact Karl-Heinz Glaßmeier (EMAIL: khg@geophys.nat.tu-bs.de) at the Technical University of Braunschweig or Olaf Amm at the Finnish Meteorological Institute (EMAIL: Olaf.Amm@fmi.fi).
